History of Zero Gravity Massage

Before starting Zero Gravity Massage we were a traditional hands-on massage center. We served thousands of couples massages over 15 years with some of the best massage therapists. It truly was an honor to employee so many massage therapists.

As we continued to grow, we faced a challenge of providing the highest level of consistent quality. Experienced massage therapists would retire or go independent forcing us to hire new and inexperienced staff. Whether you got a new or experienced therapist was random luck. And our reviews reflected that.

Unlike most businesses that pivot after they have failed, we began researching a new method for massage therapy while we were still blessed. We launched a sister brand next door to our original massage center that focused on floating, hot tub, sauna and massage chairs.  We called it "Self Service Spa".

When we take chances in life, it's often not the first intention that generates positive results. The "secret sauce" is not what the intention is, but the willingness to take the chance. We never would have imagined that the chairs would become 80% of the revenue and only 20% of the headaches of the new enterprise. And yet that is what we learned.

Between 2016 and 2018 we learned to let go of the sauna, floating and hot tub and focus 100% on the massage chair experience. It felt like a huge step backwards. It was a failed experiment. We literally tore down walls that were built with great expectations. It didn't feel like progress at the time.

July of 2018 we opened Massage Vegas on the Vegas strip as a retail location with 18 chairs side by side to serve walk-in guests. I slept in the back of the office at the mall for almost 2 years working every day, open to close. We survived barely the first year because of the sacrifices. By year 2 we were making profit and had established ourselves as a viable service earning 5 star reviews. And then COVID came....

With Vegas temporarily shutdown I was able to return to Indiana to a massage spa that had no available massage therapists. With government payments going to my staff to keep them from working, it was just me and the massage chairs. So I put two chairs in a private massage room and removed the massage tables. And a socially distant human-free massage experience was born.

Our first client came as a Father-Daughter 60 minute massage. I sat in my car and watched them walk-in. They called from the room and got instructions. He asked about sterilizing the chairs. I told him I had already done that. He requested to clean his own chairs which instantly provoked the idea that I can serve people anywhere if people are willing to clean their own chairs.

Zero Gravity Massage was born when we opened our first remote location in Atlanta, Georgia January of 2021. Lessons were learned and we now have 29 locations with over 1000 5 star reviews across the USA with a plan to be in 500 communities by 2030.
